There are a few main types of welder and welding techniques, and each is suited to a few specific applications.
MIG welding is the most versatile and easiest type of welding to learn. It can be applied to a variety of materials and thicknesses but the welds aren’t as strong as stick/arc welds, or as clean as a TIG weld. MIG welding usually requires carbon dioxide (CO2).
TIG welding is perfect for producing precise welds, but has a steeper learning curve and more limited applications than MIG. Generally used for welding thinner materials to produce welds that look perfect. TIG welding usually requires argon.
Arc or stick welding is for heavy duty applications where creating the strongest welds possible or welding thick material are required. Thanks to the high arc temperature, you can also stick weld materials like cast iron that you can’t with a MIG or TIG welder.
Getting your own welder puts you in control. You’ll be able to:
It’s a worthwhile investment whether you’re working professionally or building up your workshop.
Before choosing a machine, think about how and where you’ll be using it. Here are a few things that matter:
Welding puts out light, heat and fumes, so it’s no job to take lightly. Make sure you’re always working with:
It’s how long your welder can run in a 10-minute window without overheating. A 40% duty cycle at 200 amps means you can weld for 4 minutes, then it needs to cool down.
TIG welders are often the go-to, but some mig welders with the right wire and settings can do the job too.
You’ll want a helmet, gloves, flame-retardant clothing, and proper ventilation. Take a look at our welding safety products for everything you need.
For general use, 140A to 180A works well. Thicker materials or structural work may need something in the 200A+ range.
A machine that lets you weld using MIG, TIG, and Stick—all from one unit. Great if you need flexibility or work across different materials.
No licence is required, but you should know the basics. Training courses, TAFE, or manufacturer guides are a good place to start.
