How hot is a butane torch?

The biggest difference between a propane torch and a butane torch is the heat output. Depending on the air flow, a butane torch can burn at temperatures up to around 1,400℃, while a propane torch burns hotter and can reach temperatures up to 2,000℃.

Butane is easily stored in small containers and is more affordable than propane which makes it perfect for smaller applications like soldering softer metals and heat shrinking. The mini and micro torches on the market tend to be butane fuelled.

Thanks to the higher heat, you’ll find propane in use where higher temperatures are required for welding, soldering, annealing or brazing more heat resistant metals than a butane torch is able to.

Other uses for a gas torch

The beauty of a butane torch is that they aren’t just good for plumbing work, you can put them to a ton of uses around the home. So whether you need to fix a leaky pipe in the bathroom or your family are into their arts and crafts, a gas torch always comes in handy.

You can use a butane torch for repairing broken jewellery and frayed shoelaces or ropes. And as butane burns clean it’s also safe for food applications so you can even use your torch to put a killer sear on a steak!

And if you want to cut down on pesticide use in the garden you can put a blow torch to work to kill weeds.
