FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is a whipper snipper/ line trimmer?

A Whipper snipper or also known as Line trimmers is a hand held gardening tool designed to cut through weeds and grass to keep them looking sharp. It consists of a long shaft with a motor towards the head and a cutting plastic line at the other end that rotates very quickly.

Which whipper snipper should you get?

Depending upon what you aim to to be shaping or cutting we have a variety of options you can choose from. Our petrol whipper snippers are more durable and designed for use for longer periods of time. Our cordless and electric trimmers are often used for short and easier jobs around the garden.

How to use a Whipper snipper?

Our Whipper snippers should always be used with caution. We recommend using protective equipment when the Whipper snipper is in use to prevent injury. To use, aim the cutting plastic line towards the area you want to cut or shape and hold down the lever to activate.

What is the difference between a grass trimmer and a whipper snipper?

The main difference between a grass trimmer and a Whipper snipper is that grass trimmers shape the edges of your grass, while Whipper snippers are more so used for removing those weeds and shrubs.

Can you edge with a whipper snipper?

When wanting to edge your lawn it is more common to use a line trimmer to achieve the perfect cut, although people can still use Whipper snippers, it just will not be as precise.

Can you cut wet grass with a whipper snipper?

We recommend using your Whipper snipper on dry grass to avoid damaging the lines and prevent having to change them more frequently.

Can you use a whipper snipper to cut weeds?

Yes, whipper snippers are a great fast and effective way to cut through weeds without having to hand pick weeds.

Are whipper snippers hard to use?

The most common answer to this question is no. Our Whipper snippers are designed for a fast and effective cut through most materials in the backyard. With the push of the lever the Whipper Snipper activates ready to use.

How to bump feed a line trimmer

Line trimmers usually come with a large knob on the bottom of the trimmer spool, known as the bump knob.

This is a spring loaded device that allows new line to be released out of the trimmer head when the line gets short, this prevents the trimmer from stopping every time you need more line.

To bump feed the trimmer, make sure the trimmer is running and is facing the ground, then pull the trigger so the head is turning at full speed, then lightly hit the bump knob into the ground. When the knob is pushed and the spool is rotating fast enough, a new line will be released about 10mm at a time.

What size trimmer line is best?

Trimming line comes in a range of gauges, ranging from around 1.5mm for the thinnest up to over 3mm for the thickest gauges. The most commonly used sizes are around 2mm.

When you’re picking your trimmer line, consider the size of the trimmer you’re using and the task at hand. A small, cordless trimmer might struggle to cut grass with a full load of heavy gauge trimming line, and the final job won’t be as tidy, as the heavier gauges cut a wider line.

For grass and small weeds, line around 2mm thickness will be perfect.

Switch to a heavier gauge only when you need to trim scrub and thick weeds. Professionals often carry a couple of spools with different gauges so they can quickly switch them out.
