How to use a chain wrench

First, align the chain wrench so the teeth are gripping the pipe, and the side of the tool that connects to the chain is facing in the opposite direction that you want to turn or apply pressure. This ensures the teeth grip the pipe properly for a strong turn.

Wrap the chain around the pipe so it’s flush against the surface, then slot the chain teeth into the notch so that the chain locks in place, then turn to tighten or loosen the pipe.

Note that whenever you use a chain wrench, it’s likely to mark or scratch softer surfaces, so never use a chain wrench on a surface where the finish is a priority. In this case, you should use a strap wrench instead.

Chain wrenches vs. other types of pipe wrenches

Strap wrenches work similarly to a chain wrench, except they use a soft strap made from a strong woven material like nylon. This makes them perfect for use on plastic, polished steel or on other surfaces where you don’t want to risk damaging the finished product.

Straight pipe wrenches are the most common type of pipe wrench and come in a huge range of sizes that work on pipes of all shapes and sizes.

Generally, the longer a pipe wrench, the greater the leverage that can be applied when making a turn. Larger wrenches are also heavier, so some pipe wrenches are made from lightweight materials like aluminium to keep the weight down.

Rollnut wrenches are designed for one-handed operation and are perfect for working in tight spaces.
