Cable cutter buying guide: what to look for

Cutters and strippers cover a broad range of price points, and many come with different features. So what’s the difference between a budget friendly cable cutter and a premium one?

You can pick up a solid pair of 10” cable cutters like Daytona’s DCCP10 for less than $30, and for most light trade applications these will be more than up to the job.

In the middle of the price range, you’ll find more heavy duty cutters like the Sparrow BOXTD series which come with hardened shear action blades that can cut up to 40mm diameter cable with ease thanks to their long levers and huge leverage.

At the top of the range are the ratcheting and heavy duty ratcheting models from Sparrow, Klein and Knipex. These are able to cut through thick cable and in some cases, even steel reinforced cable. The ratcheting models are made for professional jobs and are designed for use by linesmen and others who cut thick cable on a daily basis.

What are the different types of cable cutters and strippers?

Cable cutter pliers are offered by many brands and are designed solely for cutting cable and wire. Their simple design and long levers make them perfect for heavy duty tasks.

Wire stripper/cuttters are great for electricians and home DIY experts who need to cut and strip a variety of different cable and wire sizes. This is a versatile and compact tool.

Rotary coaxial cutters like the Wattmaster WATDAT-030B1 are designed to cut and strip coaxial cable by making two cuts. One cut removes the outer insulation, while the second cut neatly exposes the centre conductor for a clean and easy installation.
