How to use an angle grinder

The angle grinder is a seriously versatile tool, but used incorrectly, they can become dangerous. Keep these safety tips in mind.

First, make sure you’ve fitted the right attachment. Need to grind some material down? Grab a grinding disc. Cutting steel? You’ll want a cutting disc.

Never try to use the face of a cutting disc as you would a grinding disc, or you can destroy the cutting disc and cause injury.

When grinding, ensure you keep the correct angle (about 15 degrees). Go much steeper and you risk digging in too far and gouging the material. Too shallow an angle and you risk catching the tool on the material, which can damage the material or cause an accident.

Using an angle grinder to cut metal or stone

Whenever you’re using a grinder to cut through hardened steel or stone, there’s a few best practises to keep in mind.

Always use the correct type of cut off disc. Attach a metal or stone cutting disc depending on the type of material to be cut.

Don’t try to make too big a cut in one go. When cutting metal, it may be better to make a series of smaller cuts to remove a piece of material rather than trying to remove it all in one go.

Grinding is noisy, dangerous work, so always wear PPE and keep yourself well protected. Sparks are going to fly when you grind/cut metal, so never cut close to flammable liquids or other fire hazards.
