What are the different classes of dust extractor?

Dust extractors are important in keeping the air on your site free from hazardous dust and particles.

There are three main classes of dust extractor you should be aware of when shopping: L Class, M Class and H Class. Each class type is suitable for dealing with a different type of dust.

L Class (low risk) are the entry level extractors which are suitable for use with general dust and soft woods.

M Class (medium risk) extractors are suited to use with hardwood, concrete and cement dust.

H Class (high risk) are suitable for use in the most hazardous applications where carcinogens such as mould, asbestos, or mineral dust are present.

Whenever you’re dealing with medium or high risk dusts, make sure you use the right type of extractor and look for units that have HEPA filters that provide over 99.9% filtration.

What is the difference between a dust extractor and a vacuum cleaner?

A Makita vacuum cleaner provides high suction but doesn’t have the advanced filtration that a dust extractor offers.

A dust extractor has multiple air filters that remove harmful particles. They are perfect for connecting to tools to collect saw dust. They usually run quieter than shop vacs but don’t provide the same level of suction so they aren’t as good for cleaning up mess.
