What is a brushless power tool?

Easily recognised in their distinctive blue/green colours, the Makita brand has become a household name worldwide thanks to their high quality tools.

One word you may have heard a lot over the last few years is “brushless”, but what does it mean?

Brushless tools get rid of the carbon brushes that traditional cordless tools use, which means their motors produce less friction and heat, so there’s very little maintenance to worry about as there are no brushes to replace. There are a few other advantages to going brushless.

What are the advantages of a brushless power tool?

Aside from getting more torque from the motor, one of the biggest advantages to brushless tools is the improved battery life.

Unlike a brushed tool,  brushless tools can sense when you’re drilling or cutting something soft like polystyrene, and the tool will lower the amount of power drawn from the battery. This means you get a lot more work time from each charge.

You also get improved control from the trigger when you want to take it slow. A brushed tool will always output its maximum power, no matter how softly you pull the trigger.

Brushless tools are usually more reliable and less prone to overheating than brushed tools because there’s much less heat created even when under heavy use.
