How to choose an air compressor

The trusty electric air compressor is one of the most versatile and useful tools in any workshop, with the ability to power a whole range of air tools.

There are a few different types that you’ll find most often, and they come in all shapes and sizes to suit the needs of everyone from the paint shop pro down to the first-time buyer.

The reciprocating compressor is the most common type of air compressor and is great for a range of applications where tools are used intermittently. Reciprocating air compressors are perfect for home use or in smaller workshops where air tools are not in constant use.

The rotary screw compressor is designed for constant use, such as in paint shops and factories where air tools are in use all day long.

What is air compressor oil?

One thing that’s often overlooked in air compressors is keeping the internals lubricated with compressor oil.

Air compressor oils are usually synthetic and while you can sometimes substitute  motor oil, it’s not recommended and using the wrong kind of oil can seriously damage your compressor.

Compressor oil is specifically designed to lubricate the bearings and other moving parts inside a compressor and does not contain the detergents and additives that some motor oil does.

You’ll see that some compressors are oil free, which just means you don’t need to add oil yourself as they come pre-lubricated.
