Keep the temperature down and cut metal without sparks flying when you buy a cold saw from the extensive range at Sydney Tools.

We carry cold saws from the most trusted names in the game including Macc, Makita, Bayer and DeWalt including handheld cold saws with cermet-tipped blades that are perfect for roofing work.

Investing in a cold saw allows you to fit metal pieces together quickly after cutting, without the need for extra machining.

What is a cold saw?

A cold saw is a circular saw specifically designed for cutting metal without generating a lot of heat. Some cold saws use a flood of coolant which transfers heat away from the blade and into the cut material during cutting.

Cold saws are often used in welding shops where a high degree of accuracy is needed. A cold saw produces clean, burr-free cuts that a band saw can’t. This saves the need for deburring the material after it’s cut.

Cold saw blades are typically high speed steel (HSS) or tungsten carbide-tipped (TCT), and can be resharpened 20 times or more before being discarded.

Cold saw vs. chop saw

Unlike the cold saw which chips material, chop saws use an abrasive disc that works similarly to an angle grinder to grind through metals and other materials.

You can spot an abrasive cut off saw by the blade—it’s usually a black metal disc, rather than the toothed blade of a cold saw.

In terms of performance, one of the biggest differences between using a cold saw and an abrasive saw is that abrasive saws tend to be loud, hot and messy when cutting, which means they aren’t suitable for use near flammable materials as they can cause sparks to fly.

Abrasive saws run at a much higher RPM than a cold saw which means they’re great for making speedy cuts, but the finished product will be rougher and require more finishing than with a cold saw.
